I wanted to write this post because I've found so many face masks over the past few years that have really helped to clear my skin and brighten my complexion. And apparently the rest of the world agrees that face masks are the bomb since, according to a recent report by Google, face masks are the top beauty trend of 2017.
Masks work so well because they do a little bit of everything:
masks clear your pores by drawing impurities out
masks provide soothing ingredients to calm redness + inflammation
masks brighten the skin with antioxidants
I’ve found that using a mask about 2-3 times per week really helps to normalize my skin. I have combination skin, meaning sometimes it's oily and sometimes it's really dry. The excess oil obviously can lead to clogged pores that cause breakouts. On the other hand, when my skin is dry it will overact and then start producing too much oil again. Thus, through a lot of trial and error I've come up with a list of the best face masks for any skin type.
Plus, don't you just feel pampered by the simple act of slathering on a mask before watching New Girl while sipping a glass of Pinot? I certainly do, which is why I've gathered my favorite face masks for any skin type.
Pharmacist Approved Face Masks for Any Skin Type
Mario Badescu Drying Mask
As soon as I saw the ingredients in the Mario Badescu Drying Mask I was instantly excited.
My 3 favorites: kaolin clay + sulfur + ichthammol
Kaolin gently exfoliates the skin, remove dead skin cells and other impurities, leaving a soft, smooth feel to the skin.
Sulfur is my go-to ingredient for fighting acne. Seriously. My acne refused to clear up despite all of my efforts until I started using a sulfur-based cleanser.
Ichthammol is an ingredient used in drawing salves. When I worked as a retail pharmacist, I would recommend ointments with this ingredient when a patient had a splinter, for example. Knowing how ichthammol works, I was excited to see how well this ingredient could draw impurities out of pores.
But I then wondered if the combo of these 3 powerful pore-clearing agents would be too much and would cause my skin to dry out...so I had to try it!
I am very pleased to say that this mask transforms my face from an oily mess to a smooth, even glow. And it is definitely not overly drying!! You can thank the natural, soothing ingredients like cucumber extract and calamine for providing that cooling, refreshing boost. The only drawback of this mask is the smell - it's quite distinct!

GLAMGLOW SuperMud Clearing Treatment
I read about the GlamGlow SuperMud Clearing Treatment on one of my favorite blogs Slightly Savvy. Katherine says this is the charcoal mask that she will take to her grave, so I just had to check it out to see if I could add it to my list of face masks for any skin type.
Here's why charcoal is legit:
Charcoal is highly absorptive.
In pharmacy school, I learned that activated charcoal is used as a poisoning antidote due to its absorptive properties. In some cases, after a person ingests a poisonous substance activated charcoal will be administered because it will absorb the toxins. This prevents the absorption of most toxic agents from the gastrointestinal tract and enhances the elimination of some agents already absorbed.
In dermatology, topically applied charcoal follows a similar mechanism: it absorbs impurities (bacteria, dirt, oil, etc.), drawing them out of your pores.
Unfortunately, charcoal can cause excess dryness in normal-to-dry skin types, so I recommend this mask for those with oily/acne-prone skin.
The GlamGlow Super Mud Clearing Treatment also contains glycolic acid, an excellent exfoliating ingredient. Glycolic acid enhances desquamation of the top layer of skin, which means dead skin cells are quickly shed off the top layer of your skin. Not only does this clear your pores, it also signals to cells in your skin called fibroblasts to increased production of collagen, the protein needed to maintain firm, smooth wrinkle-free skin.
Overall, this charcoal mask will help to fight acne + clear pores + firm skin + improve complexion
