Lip care: why it's important
Did you know that lips lose their fullness, definition, and red color as part of the normal aging process?
This is a result of decreased collagen and elastin production as well as decreased moisture levels. This is the same mechanism that explains why lines and wrinkles form in the skin. Collagen and elastin are proteins that provide our skin with structural support and elasticity - as they are degraded over time, lips begin to lose their volume.
Plus, there are external factors that will speed up this process, such as excessive sun exposure and smoking. Avoiding these factors will help to prevent loss of volume and thinning of the lips. But what can you do about lips that have already begun to thin and lose their shape? Below you'll find my favorite lip products - from balm to plumper to gloss!
Lip balm + SPF
During the day I wear a lip balm + SPF. Especially when I am on vacation. One time on a spring break trip to Jamaica, I failed to put SPF lip balm on my lips during our first day on the beach. Picture this: my lips were bigger than Kim Kardashian's (in a bad way!) So now I always have a chapstick with SPF in my beach bag. Pictured is Softlips SPF 20 lip protectant in Vanilla.
Lip balm + color
If I want some color during the day, I'll use the Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy Lips or Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Rose. Vaseline is a great choice for dry lips, but I like the color of the Burt's Bees lip balm better.
Lip serum + peptides
One of my favorite lip products is the Rodan + Fields REDEFINE Lip Renewing Serum. It is rich with peptides and Vitamin E to help my lips retain their natural moisture, visibly smooth lip texture, and reduce the appearance of lip wrinkles. It makes them feel SO soft!!
BUXOM FULL-ON LIP CREAM in ROSE JULEP
Currently my #1 favorite liquid lipstick. The color is perfect AND it is also a lip plumper!
SMASH BOX BE LEGENDARY LIPSTICK in GET FIRED
A very classic lipstick, I wear this one frequently when going out for the night!
TARTE LIPSURGENCE MATTE LIP TINT in FIERY
I love that this matte lip tint can be both casual and classy at the same time.
STILA STAY ALL DAY LIQUID LIPSTICK in AMALFI
This product is my least favorite out of all of them. I only included it because I love the color, but I don't like how it feels on my lips!
So what are you favorite lip products? I want to try a new brand and shade of liquid lipstick, do you have any recommendations? Comment below!
You know those makeup remover wipes that come in the blue packs that are like $5 at Target? Well, I swore by those wipes for years! In the last few months, however, I have noticed that they really irritate underneath my eyes!
